Examples of Early 19th Century Milestones
These milestones combine a backing stone (sometimes reusing the original 18th century milestone) and a cast-iron plate. The design varies according to the turnpike trust. Many of the milestones were utilised by mid century ordnance surveyors to carry a benchmark.
