A typical milestone

IMPORTANT NOTE (Dec 2011): This site is currently being updated, and some links may not yet work, or may lead to incomplete pages...

Welcome to the re-launched web site of the Yorkshire Group of the Milestone Society, being developed to provide more information on the activities of the Group and wealth of historic roadside features in Yorkshire.

Users looking for the database of milestones and other waymarkers in the county will no longer find it here, but should visit the Milestone Society Repository site by clicking on the "Find Yorkshire's milestones on Google Earth" menu option on the left.

The Milestone Society was formed in 2001 to record milestone data, research their history and raise public awareness of the need for appropriate care of them.You can find information about the Society via the Milestone Society main menu option.

Forthcoming Events

2012 Meetings - Why not begin planning a Spring Visit to the Yorkshire Dales or to the Lake District, or both?

A typical milestone Sunday 15th April 2012 is the usual Northern Spring Meeting at Hebden, near Grassington. Everyone is welcome!   So far the programme includes:

  • "Trods - paved ways in NE Yorkshire", as used by the panniermen, by our guest speaker, Chris Evans (no, not the ginger one);

And from our members: an illustrated talk on Boundary Stones, by David Garside; and “Cross at the cross-roads, and 230 miles to Clovelly”, by Dr Lionel S Scott;

plus the usual lively question and answer sessions, lots of displays and laughter - as well as cuppa's and cake.

And all for £2 admission fee.

Picture Galleries Launch

Yorkshire, county of many milestones, not to mention waymarkers and boundary stones. In the first of our picture galleries, accessed by the main menu option Picture Galleries, you will find examples of many different types.

There are two main divisions, those put up before 1893, often of stone with details carved in them. Then, the new country councils erected cast-iron replacements that still stretch along the main roads and many side roads.

Enough milestones survive along our roads for us to enjoy, though in many districts they are rusty and overgrown. Many of the pictures here are of those milestones that have been cared for, though you will find some that could be transformed with some simple actions.
